Dr. Samson Afewerki received his Master of Chemical Engineering degree from Uppsala University, Sweden in 2010 and subsequently, he obtained his PhD in Organic Chemistry from Mid Sweden University in 2014. Afterwards, he conducted postdoctoral research at Stockholm University.

Between 2016-2019, he was a postdoctoral fellow at Harvard Medical School (HMS) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Dr. Afewerki’s research interests are green chemistry, catalysis, valorization of biomasses and the design and fabrication of innovative and advanced biomaterials for various biomedical and tissue engineering applications.

Dr. Afewerki’s scientific and entrepreneur activity have led to more than 20 awards (e.g. Skapa award, Sweden-America foundation (The Family Mix Entrepreneurship foundation). Dr. Afewerki is author of more than 40 scientific articles, including several book chapters and reviews and holds multiple patents. He is also a co-founder of companies such as Organofuel Sweden AB, XP Chemistries, and VERI Nano Inc..
