Dr. Samson Afewerki is an Assistant Professor of Organic Chemistry in the Department of Chemistry, United Arab Emirates University (UAEU). His interdisciplinary program focuses on green chemistry and catalysis, biomass valorization, and the design of next-generation multifunctional and sustainable materials for biomedical and environmental applications.

 

Dr. Afewerki earned an M.Sc. in Chemical Engineering from Uppsala University (2010) and a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Mid Sweden University (2014). He pursued research at Stockholm University and completed postdoctoral fellowships at Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before holding research appointments at Uppsala University and the KTH Royal Institute of Technology.

He is the author of 70+ peer-reviewed publications, an inventor on 10+ patents, and the recipient of 20+ awards and grants. A scientist-entrepreneur, he co-founded XP Chemistries AB (IPO on Nasdaq First North, 2021), Organofuel Sweden AB, XyloTech Innovations AB, and VERI Nano Inc. His work integrates fundamental discovery with translational impact in sustainable materials and health technologies.
